Maltby chats U20s World Cup call and maturity on the pitch

Aston Villa defender Rachel Maltby has spoken of her pride and excitement at being called up to England's squad for the U20 World Cup this month. The tournament begins on Saturday, 5 September with Maltby and her Young Lionesses team-mates currently fine tuning preparations in camp before they face Canada, Tanzania and Brazil in Group B. Sitting down with VillaTV after her call up was confirmed, Maltby said: “To actually say it feels a bit surreal, to be honest. “I know it was a possibility from the (U19) Euros last year, but it's a whole year since we qualified for it, and there was a lot of work to be put in to get there. So, I'm just very excited. “Playing for your country is one of the best honours you can have. I'm super grateful that I have the opportunity to do it.” Since her Villa first team debut in April 2025, Maltby has made 22 senior appearances across all competitions, as well as building considerable experience through the England youth ranks. The young full-back believes this exposure to top-level football has helped her to mature both on and off the pitch. “Getting used to senior football, it's very different to youth football,” Maltby continued. “I think all of that has helped me to mature and grow as a person." Maltby added: “Playing up against senior internationals week in, week out in the WSL can only prepare you even better for playing up against internationals at my own age group, in the Under 20s.” Everyone at Aston Villa wishes Rachel and the Young Lionesses the best of luck for the competition!
