Bukayo Saka’s strike just before the hour mark was enough to seal all three points for the reigning Premier League champions at a new-look Villa Park. Unai Emery’s men showed signs of promise – with three players making their respective debuts in claret and blue – but couldn’t prevent Mikel Arteta’s side from beginning their defence of the title with successive victories.Villa’s iconic home had a slightly different look and feel to it 108 days on from the last match to be contested in B6 – against Liverpool midway through May – with North Stand renovations well underway. Still, the three sides of Villa Park in use rose as one ahead of kick-off to pay a fitting tribute to the late Jimmy Rimmer, with a period of applause accompanying a crowdsurfer flag in the The Holte End as a club legend was remembered. On the field, Emery handed debuts to two of his summer signings – Nicolas Jackson replacing the suspended João Gomes in the XI to start in attack after arriving on Friday, while Zion Suzuki came in for Marco Bizot between the sticks. The champions were looking for a second straight victory to open their campaign after easing past Coventry City last weekend, and started the game confidently, with an intense press off the ball and calm demeaner in possession making for an intriguing battle.Despite this, though, it was Emery’s charges who carried more of an attacking threat in the opening stages and came closest to breaking the deadlock inside the opening quarter of an hour. Captain John McGinn curled over from distance six minutes in after impressive work from George Hemmings to win the ball back high up the field, before five minutes later, Emi Buendía – who proved the stoppage-time hero for the hosts in this fixture last season – lashed a loose ball against David Raya’s crossbar from the edge of the area after battling work from Boubacar Kamara. The Gunners were enjoying a lot of the ball and getting warmer, but still, it was their hosts who were constantly looking to strike on the break. Almost half an hour had been played when Ian Maatsen cut inside onto his right foot and curled an effort wide of the far post. And the remainder of the opening period played out with both sides proving to cancel one another out. Arsenal remained the side with the majority of the ball but Villa – aided by impressive distribution from debutant Suzuki – ended the half looking the more likely of the two sides, as a goalless first 45 drew to a close.Villa’s momentum from the end of the opening period carried over into the second half, too. Within two minutes of the restart, Ross Barkley had dinked a ball over the top into the path of Maatsen, who fired over. However, with 54 minutes on the clock, hearts were in home mouths when Declan Rice picked up possession and threaded a ball through the Villa defence for the run of Saka. He and Maatsen tangled legs and referee Jarred Gillett pointed for a penalty, before a VAR review revealed the foul was committed outside the area, and Martin Ødegaard curled the resulting free-kick wide. But the Villans proved only able to resist Arsenal’s advances for five minutes more. Half-time substitute Eberechi Eze found Riccardo Calafiori who squared for Saka, and he made no mistake in turning home from close range to break the deadlock. Emery’s charges sought a response. Jackson had impressed on debut, with his clever movement and tricky footwork exciting the home faithful. Ten minutes after the Villans fell behind, the Senegal international picked out McGinn in behind who cut the ball back for Matty Cash, though he would see his effort blocked by one of the visitors’ striking yellow shirts.Alysson and Tammy Abraham were introduced from the bench 20 minutes from time in a bid to spark a Villa revival, and before long, the two had combined to call Raya into action at his near post. At the other end, Suzuki remained alert, and moments after keeping out Kai Havertz’s stinging drive, the Japan international did brilliantly to tip the German’s effort around the post as he raced through one on one, only later being halted by the assistant’s offside flag. Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced Matty Cash for his bow in claret and blue, while Ezri Konsa was given a warm reception from The Holte End when climbing off the bench 11 minutes from time for his Arsenal debut.
