After driving forward and teeing up McGinn for the opener, he dinked the ball over the top for Jackson to race onto and score just over half an hour later. He became the first Aston Villa defender in history to register two assists in a Champions League game. Four Champions League debutsNo less than four Villans sported the all-new Champions League ‘debut’ sleeve patch in Bruges – marking their first appearances in the iconic competition. George Hemmings started on the left and again showed bravery and guile way beyond his 19 years, while João Gomes’ industrious performance in the centre of the park – topped off with an assist for Buendía – made a very strong claim for the Player of the Match honours. Zion Suzuki provided another strong showing between the sticks, while Alysson came off the bench to great effect in the second period, showing bright touches and an explosive turn of pace and trickery to drag his side up the pitch and help see out three league phase points.
