Loris Karius silencing doubters with Schalke

The German goalkeeper's two costly errors in Liverpool's 2017/18 UEFA Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid came to define his career. Now, more than eight years on, Karius is proving himself to be among the Bundesliga's standout custodians.

The criticism following Liverpool's 3-1 defeat in Kyiv was intense, and the impact on Karius extended far beyond a bad night at the office. "Up to that point my career had only been going steeply upwards, then I suddenly crashed hard – all the way down to the bottom," he recently told the Funke Media Group.

Liverpool went on to win the Champions League the following season, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid, but Karius was no longer part of the squad. He had joined Beşiktaş on loan in search of a fresh start and a way to rebuild his career.
