Late Shannon McGregor heroics seals three points for the Hoops

SWPL Friday, September 18, 2026Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex CELTIC…1 (McGregor 90+2’) MOTHERWELL…0 Celtic FC Women sealed their 5th league victory of the season in dramatic fashion on Friday evening, scoring in stoppage time to defeat Motherwell 1-0. Substitute Shannon McGregor made the impact off the bench to deliver the win for the Hoops in Kirkintilloch. It was a return to league duties for the Hoops on Friday as they quickly headed back to the Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex fresh off their win over Spartans in the Sky Sports Cup. Grant Scott’s side were looking to keep up their winning start to the season, with Motherwell the visitors on this occasion. The Hoops have enjoyed life at their new home so far, with three wins from three home games, and were aiming to also keep that run going. It started off as a slightly cagey affair, with Celtic quickly looking to break down the stubborn Motherwell backline. Casey Howe was looking the brightest in green and white during the opening stages, taking on her marker down the right-hand side. The winger showcased some brilliantly trickery to skip beyond two Motherwell defender, but as she approached the penalty area the away side did well to recover and clear. Celtic were also aiming to threat from set plays, with a quick succession of corners around the half hour mark. Fi Morgan was a constant presence in the Motherwell box, but once more, the away side looked to be doing their bit to defend. That seemed to be the story of the match, with the visitors standing strong in defence as Scott’s side looked to break them down. The best chance of the match came just before half time, with Izzy Fisher being found in behind by a well-weighted pass from Lisa Robertson. As the Celtic number nine approached goal, she tried to lift the ball over the on-rushing Well stopper, who was out quickly to deny Fisher. It was a frustrating half for the Celts, who just couldn’t find a way to goal as they went in all square at the break. Heading into the second half, it started in a similar fashion, with Howe threatening once more down the right. After beating her full-back once again, the winger floated a ball to the back post for Hannah Luke to meet, but it was a comfortable take for the keeper. Scott looked to his bench for impact, with Hannah Jordan, Chloe Craig and Evie Rabjohn being introduced to the game. It was almost instant impact from two of his changes, with Rabjohn linking up with Jordan, who found space to get a shot off, but it was another comfortable take for the goalkeeper. As the game entered its closing stages, the Celtic boss turned to his bench to introduce Shannon McGregor, and it appeared to be an inspired change, with the midfielder going on to score the match winner. After fighting for a long ball into the box, McGregor floated the ball over the goalkeeper to win the late in stoppage time for the Hoops. It was another dramatic way for the Ghirls to seal three points, with a late goal maintaining their unbeaten start so far.
