Matchweek 5 VAR decisions explained

This article collates the X posts of the Premier League Match Centre which provides explanations for decisions made by the referees and Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in Premier League matches.

Matchweek 5 - Saturday

Incident - 86min Coventry defender Caleb Yerinkyi (No 8) goes to ground when on the ball in his own area allowing Nottingham Forest forward Igor Jesus (No 11) to score.

The Premier League Match Centre post said: "After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to Nottingham Forest – with it deemed that Igor Jesus committed a foul in the build-up.

"VAR: 'Nottingham Forest No.11 clearly stands on the foot of Coventry No.8, which prevents him from playing the ball in a normal manner.'

"REF: 'After review, Nottingham Forest No.11 steps on the foot of Coventry No.8 and trips him. The final decision is direct free-kick.'"

Incident - 58min Everton's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall sends in a corner kick which is flicked into the far corner by a powerful Thierno Barry header.

The Premier League Match Centre post said: "VAR checked the referee’s call of goal to Everton – and determined that Johnson was interfering with an opponent while in an offside position and recommended an on-field review.

"REF: 'Everton No.22 is in an offside position. He impacts the goalkeeper’s ability to save the ball. My final decision is indirect free-kick.'"

Incident - 45min Newcastle United's Jacob Murphy goes down after a challenge from Hull City winger Sorba Thomas inside the penalty area.

The Premier League Match Centre post said: "The referee’s call of penalty to Newcastle for the challenge by Thomas on Murphy was checked and confirmed by VAR.

"REF: 'On-field decision is penalty. Sorba Thomas grabs the foot – penalty kick.'

"VAR: 'There’s a small grab of the foot. He does make contact with his hand on his foot, which has impact.'"

Incident - 59min Andy Robertson crosses low into the box and Zion Suzuki parries into the space of Mohammed Kudus, who prods in for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Premier League Match Centre post said: "VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and determined that Robertson was in an offside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was disallowed."
